Ceramics I is a studio-oriented class that introduces the basics of ceramics and understanding clay as an artistic medium. Both hand-building and throwing on the potter’s wheel will be addressed in this class in conjunction with glazing and firing processes. Students will experiment with texture, imagery, and concept development within the 3D medium, creating both sculptural and functional works of art. This class will emphasize artistic critique, aesthetics, contemporary craft, ceramics within the art historical context, and, particularly, craftsmanship. For this class students will be required to keep a sketchbook or notebook in which to keep their notes from class as well as idea sketches for the art objects they will create.
